Details of safety observation:
On multiple occasions this month I have observed persons using their hands, feet, and body to hold open the doors to an elevator instead of using the door open button or allowing the doors to close and waiting for another elevator. When viewed from a safety perspective, elevators represent a confined space machine, and as with any machine that humans interact with there are normal controls and safety controls. The sensors in the doors of an elevators are safety controls to prevent injury, the door open button is the correct way to hold the door open for persons getting into the elevator.
Immediate action taken:
Coach and recommend that people use the door open button and not their body when holding the elevator doors.
